Intumescent Coatings Contractors

SPC have over 30 years of experience as intumescent painting contractors in Kent, Sussex, and Surrey

What is intumescent paint and how does it work?

Intumescent paints are an important element of passive fire protection as they can be applied to various combustible building materials to bring them into compliance with fire regulations. Intumescent paint reacts when its temperature attains or exceeds 120 degrees Celsius, resulting in a soft charring effect on its surface.

This expansion retards the transfer of heat, giving up to 4 hours of protection during a fire, and the release of water vapour (which helps to cool the substrate) greatly reduces the immediate impact of fire spread and heat damage.

In structural steelwork, the retardant properties help maintain the building's load-bearing integrity, thus preventing short-term collapse or distortion. Different applied thicknesses of intumescent coating will give varying thicknesses of "char" and therefore differing time periods of fire resistance.

What types of substrate can be protected with intumescent paint?

Intumescent coating for Structural Steel and Cast Iron

In the event of fire structural steel elements can have their load bearing capacity seriously impaired. The structure may then rapidly collapse thus impeding evacuation and fire-fighting, endangering lives.

Intumescent coating for Timber & Joinery

A range of timber and joinery substrates can be coated with intumescent paint in order to comply with standards in fire regulations, including:

  • Doors
  • Frames
  • Staircases
  • Floors
  • Cladding made of wood or wood derivatives
The two distinct standards which govern timber structures are "Fire Resistance" and "Flame retardation".

Intumescent coating for Plasterboard & Lath and Plaster

This coating system upgrades existing plasterboards or lathe & plaster ceilings and walls to either 30 or 60 minute fire resistance.

Other substrates that can be protected with intumescent coatings and fire-protective coatings

  • Electrical Cables
  • Rock Fibre Slabs
  • Concrete
